Draco Malfoy is the Slytherin fantasy of Harry Potter fans across the globe. His popularity became so notable that J.K. Rowling said she was “unnerved […] by the number of girls who fell for this particular fictional character.” Readers can’t help but swoon over his Death Eating, Voldemort-following angst. Sure, he might spend the majority of his time at Hogwarts threatening to tattletale to his father, but he’s still the bad boy we all wish would sweep us off our feet. Not to mention, Tom Felton playing him in the films certainly doesn’t hurt.
Rowling tried to tackle this Draco obsession on Pottermore. She explained, “Draco has all the glamour of the anti-hero; girls are very apt to romanticise such people.” She proceeds to crush our dreams by asserting the Slytherin is “not concealing a heart of gold under all that sneering and prejudice.” Try all you want, Rowling, but you’ll never defeat our love! We see too much hope in Malfoy to simply denounce him in our hearts.
As readers, and as humans, we have a constant hope in redemption. We see Draco as a bad-boy, and like all classic bad-boys, he needs to be “fixed.” How do we fix him? By pairing him with his best match through fanfiction. Chapters and chapters of angst (and usually sex) as Draco battles his demons and comes out a better man.
Whether you pair him with Hermione (I will go down with this ship), Harry, or even McGonagall (this is actually a thing), you are certainly not alone. There is an endless supply of Draco Malfoy fanfiction to choose from, and I’ve compiled a few of my favorite fics below for your enjoyment. If you have any more, please share them! I’m always looking for new reads.
This pairing is a goldmine of gorgeous literature. I’ve included a few cult classics, as well as some lesser-known pieces.
Fanfic Recommendation: The Fallout by Sage/Everythursday (MA, 300,000+ words)
When does redemption begin? She likes to believe it is at the top of a tower, when a boy lowers his wand, his power, his control, his future in the ranks he had been promised and walks away to never be the same again. The question for Draco Malfoy, of course, was when it ended.
I can’t. I just can’t. This. Is. Perfection. You will not read a better Dramione fic, or a better anything for that matter. Everythursday is a god. This story follows the dramatic journey of Hermione and Draco’s glorious (and very angsty) relationship as they fight to end the Wizarding war. Harry and Ron are not portrayed in the best of lights, but otherwise the characterization is spot on. If you don’t spend hours weeping while searching for lighthearted fluff after this, then you’re braver than I am. (Note: you need to create an account at dramione.org in order to read this fic, but it’s well worth it.)
Fanfic Recommendation: In the Darkness All Cats Are Grey by Ackashathekitty
(MA, 12,475 words) Hermione has a secret assignation at the Ravenclaw dormitories. So does Draco. Seems like they both will get what they want, just not from who they thought…
Yes, maybe the mistaken identity plot is overdone and the characters are just a tad out of character (Hermione drunk? At Hogwarts? Let’s be real), but this is still a great read. It’s well written and sorta mostly believable? This is definitely a guilty pleasure read, you’re welcome.
Fanfic Recommendation: Isolation by Bex-Chan (MA, 270,000+ words)
Ron and Harry are Horcrux hunting and Hermione has been left at Hogwarts to help the Order make it safe for the other students. Draco is forced by Snape to stay at Hogwarts for his own protection, but he cannot leave the room he is given: Granger’s room.
Honestly, I haven’t read this one yet. It’s been on my must-read list for months now, but I know it’s going to be an emotional roller coaster. It’s too soon after The Fallout, and I don’t think my sanity can’t handle it! A fic with a devoted following like this speaks for itself, so I have no doubts that it’s great. I’ve also read a few other things by Bex-Chan and they always deliver. Let me know what you think.
Not enough? If you need more Dramione, I highly recommend dramione.org, which is dedicated solely to Draco/Hermione goodness.
This slash pairing has a passionate pool of followers, and I think everyone has had a Drarry binge at least once. These fics guarantee extreme angst, but if you’re up for it they can be very good reads.
Fanfic Recommendation: Bond by Anna Fugazzi (MA, 200,000+ words)
Yet another one of those Harry And Draco Are Forced To Be Together By Something Beyond Their Control And Then Stuff Happens Leading To Twoo Wuv stories.
This is another stereotypical been there done that plot, but I love it. It’s pretty predictable. I assure you it ends exactly how you think it does (and how you want it to), but give it a read anyway. It’s wonderfully written, and you’ll get caught up in the drama and sexual tension. (Bonus: the author included extra scenes in her profile which are almost as good as a sequel).
Fanfic Recommendation: Mental by Sara Homes (MA, 195,000+ words)
Harry thinks that he’s already spent quite enough time sharing a mind with someone else, thankyouverymuch. A miscast Legilimency spell says otherwise…
Once again, a tired plot with this one, but still fantastic! This is a well written favorite of mine. I can’t seem to get enough of the forced bonding stories. Keep writing them, I need more!
This is another fic on my must-read list. I’ve been waiting to read it forever, but like I said, The Fallout really messed me up! I included this one because of its plethora of outstanding reviews. Next to Bond, it’s regarded as one of the best stories for this pairing. It’s disgustingly long, just how I like them. Again, let me know what you think if you’ve read it.
Not satisfied? Check out the Harry Potter slash fanfiction page on Goodreads. It lists 230 stories, most of which are Drarry.
Whether it’s my attraction to Tom Felton, or my weakness for Slytherin in general, I will never tire of reading Draco fanfiction. Through fanfiction, Draco redeems himself again and again. We, as readers, are obsessed with giving Draco the happily ever after he so deserves. As long as writers keep sharing their stories, Draco will continue to prove that everyone deserves a second chance.
